| It's been an interesting year in the world of firearms. First, reciprocity. Not only has Wyoming decided to honor a Minnesota carry permit, but the State of Washington now honors a Florida permit. That means that, with both a Minnesota and a Florida permit, you can now carry in Wyoming and Washington. Second, the Supreme Court has heard the arguments for McDonald v Chicago, the case that could lead to every state being required to recognize our fundamental right to self-defense. After reading the transcript of the arguments, it looks like a slam-dunk. Chicago certainly didn't get their money's worth out of their attorney, which is for the best. Third, Iowa has passed a "shall issue" carry law. Starting next year, residents will be able to get a carry permit based on objective standards, instead of the arbitrary whim of local law enforcement. Best of all, they will be honoring the carry permits of any state, meaning your Minnesota permit will be valid in Iowa. Locally, there is a bill making successful progress through the legislature that will remove the felony label for bringing toy guns into schools. Another bill that could strip people of their rights for petting the wrong dog has been corrected. Finally, the boogey-man hydra--the bill to close the imaginary "gun-show loophole" has been shot down. Again. Our friends at the Capitol will be keeping and eye on this one to make sure it stays down. So far, it's been a successful legislative session. Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars. As anyone who has taken our class knows, referrals are our lifeblood.
