Welcome to the August 2009 Metro Defense Training newsletter.   Can you believe summer is almost over?

The big news we have this summer is that we have changed our pricing plan for veterans.  For most of this year, we have offered our class absolutely free of charge to veterans.  Any vet with an honorable or medical discharge was welcomed into our class as our way of saying thanks.  The only things the veterans had to pay was the range fee and the book price, if they wanted to get it below sticker price.

We have changed that.  Not because we are less grateful, but in an effort to simplify things for everyone.   Our price for veterans has gone from $0.00 (MDT fee) +  $20 (range fee) + $20 (for the optional book) to $50.   Fifty dollars covers the range fee, targets, coffee, doughnuts, and a copy of your choice of the two books we offer in class.   Now, there will be no more standing in line to pay at the range, no more extra signatures, just one quick, smooth process.   Obviously, we aren't planning to get rich on this plan.

As always, we would like to thank veterans everywhere for their service.

Recent Questions
Q:  Why don't you recommend getting a New Hampshire non-resident permit?
A:  From New Hampshire's website: Effective July 1, 2009, the fee for Non-Resident Applications increases from $20.00 to $100.00.

Given this ridiculous increase simply to soak non-residents, we can't recommend New Hampshire as a service.  Our new recommendation is Pennsylvania.  Pennsylvania's permits are issues by the county Sheriff's offices.   Centre County (http://www.co.centre.pa.us/sheriff/license_application.asp) has taken the service-oriented approach to non-resident permits.

From their website:

Completed and Signed Application must be accompanied by the following:

  1. A photo copy of a license to carry a firearm (concealed carry permit) from your home state if that state has a concealed carry law.
  2. A photo copy of your Driver's License.
  3. A self addressed stamped envelope.
  4. $26.00 fee for five year license and out of state processing. (Check/money order made out to Centre County Sheriff.)

Mail to:

Centre County Sheriff's Office
213 East High Street
Bellefonte, PA 16823

That's a six dollar increase, less paperwork and better coverage.  A Pennsylvania permit will cover North Dakota, which makes it a good choice for a Minnesota resident.  Virgina, West Virginia, Texas, Arkansas, and Montana also recognize a Pennsylvania permit.  You will lose Mississippi and Alabama, but both of those recognize a Florida permit, which is highest on our list of recommended non-resident permits.

Security in Your Home, Part 6: Training

In the worst case scenario, the intruder has made it through all of your layers. He has decided your well-lit house is worth entering. He has bypassed your locks and ignored your alarm. Your dog is incapacitated, and he has entered your safe-room before the police have had a chance to arrive. Here, you are left to rely on your training.

Consider getting a gun and gun training. There is no more effective method of self defense than a gun in trained hands. Don’t get the gun without getting training. The NRA offers courses all around the country for a generally reasonable fee.

Don’t treat the gun as a magic talisman to ward off evil. If you are planning to have a gun for self defense, you must be willing to use the gun. It won’t scare off intruders if you are not willing to use it.

If a gun in impractical, for whatever reason, consider unarmed self defense training.

Your training should include the legal aspect of using force-particularly lethal force-if the necessity arises.

No matter your method of training, never give up! If you can disrupt the script in the intruder’s head, you stand a much better chance of surviving unscathed.

Remember, your home provides the privacy necessary to effectively transform it into a “secondary crime scene” at the whim of a criminal. Don’t let it happen to you.

Until next time,

Jason and Mike
